South Central Connecticut Regional Emergency Communications System

The CMED System is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Established in 1977 as the result of a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to improve the quality of Emergency Medical Services Communications and to support the establishment of Paramedic Level Service in the Greater New Haven area.  Since its establishment, the agency has been directly responsible for or had a significant impact on the development of the second to none pre-hospital emergency care system that is enjoyed by the residents and visitors to the Greater New Haven area.

CMED New Haven is organized under Connecticut General Statutes as a Inter-Local Government Compact Agreement.  CMED is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the Mayors and First Selectman of the Cities and Towns that it serves.  Funding is provided by the member communities based on a population usage formula and supplemental funding is received from the State of Connecticut Enhanced 911 Fund.  CMED Emergency Telecommunicators are represented by the Communication Workers of America Local 1103, AFL-CIO.
